O'Grady was born in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. She was raised by her parents who resided in Wheaton in Illinois and was graduated in 1981 with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. Models appeared in commercials for some time before relocating into Los Angeles. Career O'Grady began her career as the model of Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was then cast as a frequent character in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. She has also guest starred and appeared on independent movies and TV shows. Donna Abandando, her first major role in the ABC detective show NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady, who played the big-haired secretary from 1993 to 1996 received Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting Actress.
